TOUR OF UTAH: UMBERTO MARENGO, AN UNFORGETTABLE FIRST WIN

When in Italy the night was incoming, the star of Umberto Marengo started to shine at the Tour of Utah where the piemontese rider has achieved his first win as a pro at the end of a stage literally dominated by the team Neri Sottoli – Selle Italia – KTM that has placed in the top 10 also Sebastian Schonberger whose work was amazing in the last kms.

Manuel Bongiorno joined the early breakaway with Prado, Samuel, Boardman and Vodicka. Our rider was very unlucky when, entered the final circuit with the climb of North Logan to be repeated five times, he was forced to stop by a flat tyre.

With all the five escapees caught before the last lap, the team of Frassi and Scinto decided to move forward first with Lorenzo Fortunato, who attacked despite a crash, and then with the duo Schonberger – Marengo, a move that happened after the final climb to North Logan.

Our two riders, who were part of a five men break, were on the same page with Schonberger who sacrified himself for his team mate before trying a solo move to put pressure on the other escapees.

The austrian rider looked very close to the win but his action was stopped with less than 100 metres to go with Marengo that was ready to replace him with a fantastic sprint that let him achieve his first pro win.

“I’m delighted – says the winner of today – the team has been perfect and I want to thank all my team mates. We did a solid job and when in the final of the race I’ve found myself in the lead group with Sebastian we understood each other very quickly. He has worked for me and after his attack he forced the other riders to work. I want to thank the management of the team for the trust in me, we came here in the USA with a special jersey and motivated to do well at home of our sponsor Meter. We are sure that they will be very happy too with this result”

Tomorrow the hard climb of Powder Mountain will be a first test for the GC contenders
